Week of 8/13- 8/17, 2012

We will complete Spelling, Lesson 1-4 in class this week, and students will have a spelling test on Friday.  Students will copy their list to study from on Tuesday this week.  Their only homework associated with Spelling is to study the list.  We will complete the activity workbook in class each day.

In Math, we will complete Saxon, Lessons 1-10 this week.  Students begin homework in class, and if it is not completed, they will take it home for homework.  Regardless of whether or not they finish their math homework in class, they should bring their math book/homework home for you to check if you would like them to do so.  We complete activities in class that teach the lesson concepts by working through examples given in the book, as well as my own practice examples.  The students write in a math journal every day to take notes.

We have Music on Monday's, Wednesday's, and Friday's for a half-hour each of those days.
We have Art on Tuesday's and Thursday's for about 47 minutes each of those days.

5th Grade Lunch is from 11:38- 12:08 every day (except on Early Release Days.)

This week in Reading, we will complete a Pretest, as well as begin an introduction on completing a comprehension plot line.  Plot lines are a big part of 5th Grade reading assignments (in class and
long-term projects), so it is important for your child to learn how to apply this to books they are reading.  They will have several examples of the plot lines by the time this week is complete.  We may begin a Literature Unit study on "Holes" by Louis Sachar as well, which would include activities in class based on vocabulary, character traits, summarizing, sequencing, etc.

In Language Arts, we will complete the first 5 lessons in class and discuss the concepts.  After students have practiced the concepts/skills, they will have a homework assignment (worksheet) each night on what they were taught in class that day.  All of the lessons this week focus on types of sentences, fragments, combining sentences, etc.

In Social Studies, we are beginning the unit on a review of geography and a study of the United States, states, regions, latitude/longitude, etc.

In Science, we will begin the unit with an introduction to 5th Grade Science by discussing and reading about proper usage of equipment, expectations, and reviewing the Scientific Method.  For Science, the students will also watch educational DVD's that are associated with the curriculum to demonstrate the concept/skill.

Students will always have a breakdown of classwork and homework listed in their planners every night.  Please check with the planner for more specific information on assignments.  If you have any questions, email me at any time.  My email address is: lrobinson@aoths.net

I look forward to working with your children and meeting you soon.
