Language Arts:
This week, we are studying notetaking/summarizing, sequencing (in class), main idea, nouns, singular/plural nouns, etc. in class. Students will have one Language Arts worksheet for homework each night this week over the skill taught in class.  Language Arts, Unit 2 will be completed before Christmas Break due to having already been taught writing a persuasive essay using the Writing Process (AZ State Standards- 5th Grade Writing) when we read the book "Hoot."  Students have written many personal narratives using the Writing Process, (introduced in Unit 1) throughout this school year as well.  In January, we will begin with Unit 3.  Please be assured that all Language Arts lessons will be taught in 5th Grade.

Spelling:
This week, we are studying words that end in -es to make them plural, while also practicing spelling rules already practiced.  We will complete Lessons 31- 34 with a spelling test on Friday.  As a reminder, there are 120 spelling lessons and 180 school days.  Please be assured that all spelling lessons will be completed in 5th Grade.

Reading:
We are reading "Hatchet", chapters 6-9 this week, while focusing on activities that reinforce the AZ State Standards for 5th Grade Reading.  Students write the main idea with supporting details for each chapter they read and on Thursday, they will complete a sequencing activity.

*Note* Brian Robeson, the main character in "Hatchet", struggles to survive in the wilderness once his plane crashed.  Students filled out a worksheet titled "Items for Survival" in class and had to discuss 7 things they would bring if they were in Brian's situation.  There were requirements for the items, but nonetheless, one group's idea led us to discuss the brave men and women who serve in our military.  This led to a discussion on the brief experience that I, myself, spent in Army ROTC.  Needless to say, I thought it was worth mentioning to provide the context of the brief discussion we had.  If you have questions, please come to me with them.  As a teacher and due to my life experiences, I think it is important to honor the men and women who serve our country in the military, as well as in law enforcement.  When these teaching opportunities present themselves, it becomes a good time to reflect on current events (or events that changed history) and be humbled by the services of our U.S. military.

Language Arts:
We have been reviewing sentences, sentence fragments, compound sentences, punctuation, complete subjects/predicates, simple subjects/predicates, compound subjects/predicates in class.  This week, we will continue that review, as well as practice correcting run-on sentences and sentence fragments.  Students will not have language arts homework due to the short week, but please be expecting grammar worksheets for homework to reinforce skills taught in class in the upcoming weeks. Up to this point, we have focused most of our language arts time devoted to the writing process, where students created pre-writing examples, rough drafts, revising/editing and final copies for their personal narratives and persuasive essay.  From this point on, students will be completing the Language Arts grammar lessons in the book in an orderly fashion.  Please be assured that all grammar lessons will be taught by the end of the school year and students will have ample opportunity to reinforce/practice these skills throughout.  As a reminder, students are expected to write the objective for all of my core subjects in their planner every day regardless of whether homework was assigned or not.  Before school is dismissed, this will be more closely monitored to make sure these objectives are being communicated to parents.  Your child takes notes and writes the objective that I provide on a daily basis for language arts and math, and they should be able to recite these upon your request.  I extend an invitation to all parents to feel free to come in and volunteer, observe, spend the day in our classroom at any point in time, announced or unannounced.  We can always work together anytime.

Spelling:
This week, we will complete one spelling lesson in class on Monday that will review plural variations (words ending in s,x,z,sh, or ch add -es to make plural), "y" and "w" as a vowel.  On Tuesday, students will take a Spelling Test that covers the above spelling rules.  On Wednesday, we will be celebrating Thanksgiving with colonial games, a feast, and "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" movie from 12:15- 3:00.  Thanks to all of the parents who volunteered to attend or provide a dish.

Wednesday, 9/28- lesson 24
Thursday, 9/29- lesson 25
Friday, 9/30- Cumulative assessment #4 (100 points), multiplication fact test/ word problem (90 points)

*Parents/students*
1)  As another friendly reminder, math homework is graded on a daily basis for effort/quality and completion.  Each math homework assignment is worth 5 points.  One month of homework is equivalent to 1 single assessment.  The points are not awarded for accuracy; therefore, if your child is getting questions/answers incorrect on the math homework, we thoroughly discuss/correct them the following day at the beginning of math class.  The homework is not an assessment grade, and if I graded them for accuracy on a daily basis for 60 students, 30 problems on each assignment, I would be grading 1,800 math problems every night.  Math homework is for anecdotal purposes only and like previously mentioned, we have a thorough discussion in class.

2)  Although this is my 8th year of teaching, it is my first year teaching 5th Grade Saxon Math.  Naturally, adjustments will be made to ensure efficiency, and I consider continual learning to be an integral aspect as to how to make the program run smoothly.  I have encountered my first "qualm" so to speak and thought I would mention it on my blog.  Since the toner on a copier prints out math graph paper for the homework sheets so dark, I have allowed students to use the 4th grade answer sheets upon request.  Most of the students write so neatly that they have not needed to align their answers according to the graph paper.  There were a few parents who donated the 4th grade answer sheets to the elementary school after notice of 5th grade utilizing the graph paper, and I will be glad to make copies myself for those parents if it is easier for your child to complete math problems on.  I do apologize for this inconsistency but please be reassured that things will run smoothly after this adjustment.  I have made my own math homework template that I will make copies of to share with all of the students if they are interested in it.  If it is possible for them to make additional copies if they so choose in the future, that will be acceptable.  I am always looking for ways to be more efficient at my job, and what can I say?  I'm only human!  Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding.

3)  I had sent "conference reminder" slips home in your child's planner on Monday which notated your conference date and time.  Please be advised that in order for your child to receive their report card, conference attendance is mandatory for parent(s)/guardian(s).  Thanks to the parents who have confirmed their appointment.

4) Mt. Lemmon is approaching fast!  Please know that your child's cost for the retreat is $30 and was due on Mon. 9/26.

Thanks!  We continue to have a great school year due to the hard work of students and teachers alike.  Good job.

**Special Note** I would really like to thank the parent volunteers for helping out with miscellaneous administrative work in my classroom.  It is so nice to work in such a supportive environment with high-achieving students. Thanks to those students who continue to put forth their best effort every day.  You make my job easier...which is nice!

*Special bonus math problem for extra credit- if anyone actually reads my blog!*
Word problem:
You needed 2 hours to get to a beach to meet your friend during summer vacation but you had to stop for snack on the way that set you back 18 minutes.  You took 1 scooter ride during that time.  You then took a walk, found a doughnut stand and purchased 2 doughnuts for $3.09.  You remembered that you needed to meet your friend at the beach in 13 minutes.  How many minutes would you be late in meeting your friend?

a) Do you have all of the information you need to solve the problem?
b) Is there information that is not needed in solving the problem? If not, what is it?
c) What is the answer, if there is one?

Wednesday- no homework, we will complete a math investigation in class
Thursday- no homework, Test #1 in class

Thanks to all 3 classes for regularly turning in homework and being so diligent about this responsibility!!!! Keep up the good work!

Language Arts:
We will complete our language arts, reading and spelling activities in class.  If you have any questions about these activities, please email me at lrobinson@atmschool.net  Students usually finish these assignments, but in the event they are not completed in a timely manner, sitting out at recess to complete them may occur.  There will be a spelling test on Thursday and the 2 vocabulary activities for your child's reading contract on animals is due Friday.  Thanks to the students who try their very best every day to put forth quality work!

We will continue working on our literature unit on Holes chapters 1-5, with vocabulary activities, reading-for-response, short quizzes, etc. in class this week.  We will complete character maps, sequencing, comparing/contrasting, main idea activities as well.

Math:
Saxon Lessons 4-8.  These lesson topics include comparing whole numbers, naming whole numbers and money, adding whole numbers, writing/comparing numbers through hundred thousands, ordinal numbers, relationship between addition and subtraction.  Each lesson includes homework, which is the "written practice" section of their math book.  Please note that students will most likely finish their math homework in class or during study skills.  As a reminder, students returning homework in the next day after it was due will only receive half credit.  If it is returned the 3rd day or later after it was due, they will receive a zero.  This policy was described in the "Welcome to 5th Grade" letter that parents and students signed during the first week of school.  For every day a student is absent, they will have that many more days to turn in their homework and still receive full credit.

Friday, August 19, 2011

Language Arts:
Spelling Test Lesson 5, No homework
**note** Spelling tests are every 5 lessons and may or may not fall on a Friday.

Discussed/graded lesson 2 homework, introduced lesson 3 on using money to illustrate place value, Homework-Lesson 3 written practice (most students had time to finish in class, but if not, it was assigned as homework).
**note** Saxon math tests are scheduled for every 10 lessons.  The tests do not always fall on a Friday.  When students do have a math test, they will not have homework for that night.  Additionally, students have been told many times that they need to bring only a couple of math homework sheets (or graph paper), or at least 1 sheet to class every day.  At no such time was it ever mentioned that they needed to bring all 130 copies.  I have demonstrated how to set up the math homework sheet if students are going to make their own on the graph paper.  They were shown to make the boxes 10 across and 10 down, with 3 total boxes going across.  There are 30 total number of math problems for homework.
